What is the Social Work Census?

The Census is a comprehensive survey of social workers in the United States and Canada. It has two parts:

  1. Workforce study: Demographic information, education, practice setting, employment experiences, clients served
  2. Practice analysis: Knowledge, skills, and abilities required to practice safely and ethically

Data from the workforce study will be shared with the profession. Data from the practice analysis will help form the content outlines for the next iteration of social work competence assessments for licensure.

All responses are completely anonymous and confidential.

Who should take the Census?

All social workers in the United States and Canada are invited to participate. EVERYONE who is involved in social work — social workers, social service workers, social work administrators, clinical supervisors, social work faculty, social work students, retired social workers and more — is encouraged to complete the Social Work Census.

The Social Work Census is available in English, French, and Spanish.

How long will it take?

Plan to spend approximately 90 minutes to two hours to complete the Census. The software will allow you to stop and return.

Why should I complete the Census?

Service to the profession: Your participation in the Census will help compile the largest workforce dataset in the history of social work, making research on social work workforce issues possible. The practice analysis data will ensure that competence assessments required for licensure reflect current practice.

Donations to social work and social work-aligned organizations: To encourage social workers and social service workers to complete the Census, ASWB has pledged to contribute up to $100,000 to nonprofits selected by the Social Work Workforce Coalition. When you complete the Census, you will be invited to select an organization to receive a $1 donation. Your donation, along with the donations of other participants, will be given to the nonprofit you select after the Census ends.

Free CE credit: You will be eligible to request two hours of continuing education credit after you have completed the Census. Look for the link to the request form when you finish.

When should I complete the Census?

The Social Work Census is available through Friday, May 31, 2024.
