SUMMARY:NETGroup: Disability Employment
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Program Model Exploration – RAISE – Offered by Shalom Orlando \n  \nRAISE is a work and social skills training program for adults with disabilities who are seeking employment and face challenges finding work. \nOffered by Shalom Orlando\, RAISE collaborates with 18 partnering locations and engages 1:1 volunteer job coaches to provide paid employment at each of these locations. In addition\, RAISE offers guidance to help participants transition to jobs in the community. \n  \nRAISE offers each participant the self-worth that comes from earning a paycheck\, the satisfaction of being a participating member of society\, an accepting work environment\, the self-respect that comes with productivity\, the dignity of having a job\, a feeling of contribution\, and the social benefit of interfacing with our community in a safe and compassionate setting. \nDuring this time\, job skills are modeled\, shaped\, and refined. RAISE builds self-esteem\, fosters independence at home and in the workplace\, educates and inspires participants and their families to set new goals\, supports and encourages social growth\, and creates awareness of services and opportunities available in the community. \nThe presentation will provide an overview of RAISE\, the measurable impact it is having in Central Florida\, and what is involved in replicating the model in other communities. \nSpeaker Bio \nRachel Slavkin\, M.Ed. has been working in the field of disability services for over 30 years. She earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Special Education from Penn State University. \nRachel began her career as a special education teacher working with both middle and high school students and was the Special Education Department Chair for a public school district in Pennsylvania. It was during this time that her passion began for helping transition students to the workforce. \nAfter moving to Florida\, Rachel served on the faculty of Seminole State College for 20 years while creating and running RAISE. She also was a lead facilitator at Social Bridges where she led social skills groups for teens and adults with social challenges. \nNow as the director of inclusion services for Shalom Orlando\, where RAISE is housed\, Rachel manages all of the day-to-day operations of RAISE overseeing all of the RAISE participants\, their family liaisons\, volunteer job coaches\, and community partners. Rachel works tirelessly to build an inclusive workforce in Central Florida. \nRachel is married and has two adult children and two dogs. Rachel & her husband are involved in their synagogue where they are both on staff at the religious school.
