The Jewish Federation of Kansas City, in partnership with Jewish Family Services (JFS), has launched a new interest-free loan pilot program designed to support members of the Jewish community facing financial challenges.

The program offers loans of up to $7,500 to existing adult JFS clients in the Kansas City metro area to help cover essential expenses such as medical or dental bills, car repairs needed for employment, health insurance costs, moving expenses, property taxes, funeral costs, or paying down high-interest debt.

Applications will be reviewed by a newly formed loan committee using an anonymous process, and approved borrowers will complete paperwork electronically with automatic monthly repayment withdrawals.

The initiative builds on a long tradition of Jewish “free loan” programs across the country. After joining the International Association of Jewish Free Loans (IAJFL), Federation leadership explored best practices and learned that when these programs are implemented well, 98–99% of loans are repaid—demonstrating their effectiveness in providing dignified financial support.

The program also responds to a growing recognition of financial vulnerability within Jewish communities. A recent community study found that 23% of households in the Greater Kansas City Jewish community struggle to make ends meet, reflecting national trends.

Community leaders say the initiative reflects a core Jewish value: supporting one another with dignity and compassion. The Federation and JFS hope the pilot will make a meaningful difference for families navigating financial hardship.
